From Primary 4 onwards the children are introduced to the Accelerated Reading Programme, an online resource made up of reading and vocabulary quizzes which assess their understanding and provide feedback to the teacher to help monitor their progression.

The main aim is to encourage enjoyment of books in general and there are thousands of books on the system.  Pupils are guided to choose books at their own level, ranging from the classics to the most recent releases.

When doing a quiz, the children click on whether they have read the book independently, or with someone else, so they can even do quizzes on the books you have read to, and with, them at home. 

They receive certificates and rewards as they progress and a tally is kept of the total number of words read.  The ‘Wordies’ in each class are the children who have accumulated the most words that month, either by reading several short books or one long one.   Who knows, one day your child could come home to tell you they are now a Word Millionnaire!
