Over the last month P5 have been learning a lot about Vikings; where they came from, what they did and how they lived day to day. One of our favourite activities was investigating how they dyed their clothes from natural materials. We used onion skins and compared ordinary onions to red onions. We have also been learning to play Hnefatafl, which is a board game similar to chess or draughts. There are two teams, invaders, who try to capture the King, and defenders who have to protect the King. The catch is, there are twice as many invaders as defenders. It was a great way for children in Viking times to learn tactics and practise their thinking skills. Let's hope it does the same for us!
