Portna visit
7th Mar 2024
P4-7 celebrated Engineers week with a very interesting visit to Portna canal. They were told a little of the history of the area and how people have been living and fishing along the Lower Bann for thousands of years. The engineers explained why the canal had been built and they demonstrated how the gates operate. They also got to speak to the joiner who has responsibility for building the new gates according to the original Victorian drawings. One of the surprising discoveries we made was that not all wood floats! P5 & 6 had the chance to ask lots of questions as they have been learning about Victorian engineers, and they are also learning about the River Bann in our salmon project.
