Poetry Together

17th Nov 2023

We are so proud of our P6 pupils!

They were invited to participate in an initiative called Poetry Together. This exciting initiative brings younger and older generations together through the joy of poetry. It is founded by Gyles Brandreth, and has been supported by Her Majesty, The Queen.

Primary 6 jumped at this opportunity and have worked with Miss Steele to focus on poems based on the theme of happiness. Some pupils learnt poems that made them happy and everyone had a go at creating a Haiku, based on the theme of happiness. We asked Kilrea Writing Group and U3A Poetry members to create poems on happiness and invited them into school so we could share our poetry!

We were delighted when the Lord Lieutenant, Mrs Millar came along with one of her deputies, Mrs Scott. She explained that she represents the King and Queen was delighted to be attending our poetry event.

The boys and girls led the event by informing our guests about creating their Haiku poems. Two pupils recited poems that made them laugh. Another child recited a beautiful poem she had created about her baby sister. Then two girls recited 'The Isle of Innisfree' and our visitors were invited to join in. Our guests performed poems they had created and Mrs Millar shared a funny poem to conclude the recitations. Then we sang the song 'Happiness' by Ken Dodd.

Our visitors had a cream tea and our boys and girls enjoyed some well-deserved treats!

We spent time viewing our Haiku creations and some of our favourite poetry.

We had a very special afternoon, our boys and girls were amazing and we loved interacting with our guests.

Mrs Millar said, "I simply cannot say how much I enjoyed the Year 6 pupils and your staff today. What wonderful children. All of them so personable and original in their thinking."

Memories were made today!
