Bushmills Salmon Station

23rd May 2024
A wet and windy day did not deter P6 pupils from Kilrea and St. Columba’s Primary Schools from going to find out what might have happened to their salmon fry, last seen in Stephen’s bucket a few weeks ago.  Today they learned about the next stages in the lifecycle and how long it takes the smolt and then the adult salmon to travel down and then back up the river to lay more eggs.  They fished their nets into the tanks to see each stage and walked along the river, stopping to see the kind of food the salmon would eat on their journey.  It takes several years to complete the cycle and unfortunately on this occasion there were no mature salmon in the trap. Better luck next time perhaps, with the weather and the salmon!
